What is This., yo?

I've actually been out most of the week, filing This. thing remotely. But I couldn't yesterday, which is fine, because blogging is dead. Or not. At any rate, we never found out if bloggers are journalists.

This. silly question has been going on for as long as blogs have been around, even though blogging has died over and over and over. All things go in circles.

Except climate change (conspiracy theories). I know, I know. Nobody believes in scientists. I mean, who do they think they are? Scientists?

Politician says politicians are corrupt. All things go in ...

I've got some invites to This.cm, which is why I've been inexplicably using 'This.' instead of 'this'.  I'll give the invites out to the first people who reply within the newsletter (I need your email for it). People are 'clamoring' for them, after all, even thought I'd had these invites for a while and you'd probably never heard of it? I'd expect to have the same number of invites by the end of this experiment, because All things go ...

5 thing you totally, most definitely need to something something

I didn't tweet much at all yesterday (I know!) and this is supposed to be about things I tweeted. So to be brief and to try something new, here are the current five trending stories at the Freeman. Think of this like one of those daily newsletters, but one that you'll actually read, like mine, right? RIGHT?

SO, here are 5 thing you need to something something actually it's just a list:
* Law and Disorder. The police blotter is unstoppable. Everyone likes it and loves to hate it and nobody wants to be in it. This comes up often, so I might as well put it here: if you're in it, the Freeman can update the status of the case. But no, we don't take things down and we can't take you off of Google.
* A woman says he was given a fake Benjamin. BY HER BANK.
* There are some school delays but this story is kind of too late if you're just reading it to be useful in any manner lololol.
* Drugs are bad, mkay?
* Tania took a bunch of photos of the snow on Tuesday and caught this bald eagle.

NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE

No day but today. But today kind of sucks

Today I'll be brief because life has gotten in the way of the Life Department business. How dare you,  life? I've got Life to do.
No loss, though, because today has been canceled, even though it didn't really need to be?
I hope you have plans for all the vegetables and milk you bought.
So I'm calling it. We don't know how to winter (I'm also turning 'winter' into a verb).
Also today, New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver hasn't been canceled, even though he needs to be?
Today is weird. Time to criticize your mayor.
The town supervisor of Wawarsing wants to use a maximum security jail's unused building to grow pot. There's a lot more nuance to that but I'm going to leave that there. *Insert pot joke*
On Feb. 5, 1907, the Kingston Freeman reported that an unnamed president of the United States went out in a blizzard. *Insert pot joke*

One cat: Hope you're enjoying the snow.

Let's get buried together in the Snowpocalypsmaggedon

Kenneth Wilson park photo by Tania Barricklo. MOAR this way.
I hope you're home by the time you read this if you're in the Hudson Valley or the Catskills because we're about to get 12 to 24 inches of snow depending on how miserable you wanted to be when you picked a place to live in the area good jorb.

Anyway, if you want to share your pics on the twitters or the instagrams, use #dfsnow to share your photos but don't do that on Facebook because hashtags are terrible on Facebook.

The Freeman is on Instagram, by the way, but don't tell anybody, otherwise I only have the Freeman Tumblr left to to crazy things.

The links:

* Did you know Wikipedia has a 'supreme court' and that it can ban people from editing articles?   It's all because of the 'Gamergate controversy' and you'll regret it if you click on that last link to the Wikipedia article. People can be awful.

* Talking about terrible people, check out this terrible list of now 38 terrible New York state lawmakers who have face legal or ethical charges since 2000.  The 'How Many Days' since a New York lawmaker's arrest counter had to reset.

* Terrible names: There are two private equity firms reportedly interested in buying the parent company of the Freeman, one named after a Greek god that can bring "ill health and deadly plague" and the other named after a three-headed hell hound. The scary part of that sentence is "private equity firms."

* Terrible Skymall, we hardly knew ya.

One cat: Me IRL

One Google Glass photo: Kingston Fire department trucks.

This photo reminds me of the time we gave a Kingston firefighter Google Glass for a day. Fun times.

Please do not molest or throw missiles at animals in New York City Parks

The State of the State is yet another Albany lawmaker getting arrested.

Blame this guy.

That's a good thing, of course. Albany is terrible.
I mean, remember that time when Albany wanted to ban anonymous comments?

TROLOLOL. Anyway, Can Internet comments be saved? No comment.

That post, btw, has a pretty awesome ~print~ letter to the editor from a long time ago. Good times.  And yes, it was pretty awkward when animal people thought I didn't like catsHere's why.

So, in case we're not clear: Please do not molest or "throw missiles at" animals in New York City parks because that's very specifically spelled out as being against the law, but don't do it in other places either, OK?

Writing that felt weird. Don't make me write weird things.

You know what's also weird? Penn Station.
Another weirdish New York thing is the State Department of Environmental Protection, pretty much telling artists: "OHAI could you get rid of this driftwood from the Ashokan Reservoir pretty please?" It's reclaimed!
No? you don't want it? What kind of Hudson Valley or Catskills resident are you, anyway?

I recognize that most of this post is related to New York State. So, if you're one of the lovely subscribers from the West Coast or elsewhere, here's an explainer of the state of New York in the form of a drunk plane.

One cat: Since we're into explainers.

Can Internet comments be saved?

Not an Internet comment. But wait! There's MOAR!

Journalists, members of Digital First Media and pretty much everyone else who wants to - are going to be taking part on the weekly Twitter chat Wednesday at noon, Eastern Time.

Today we comment about comments, again. As they move more and more to social platforms, is it worth having them in your own site?

The feed is posted below. You can also check out past chats over here.

If you want to chime in, post a comment in the container or a tweet with the hashtag "#dfmchat" so it can automatically appear below.

The state of the hot takes is garb

Let's get that burn out of the way.

If you watched the State of the Union last night without bingo cards you were doing it wrong.
After all, hot garbage site Gawker said (intelligently!) that the state of the union speeches is garbage. Columbia Journalism Review even asks, "Should journalists care about the State of the Union address?"

Well, it was tweeted, reddittedannotated and emoji-ed, and some of those aren't even real words, so there you go.

All I wanted to know was, what was that thing next to orange House Speaker John Boehner?

<!-- NSFW paragraph follows. Just skip it -->

Right out of the oven: Ben Dreyfuss says Obama is out of ducks, with an F, because he read 'The Suble Art of Not Giving a F***."  This is a family newspaperblog and/or newsletter so we can't say 'fucks,' c'mon now.

<!-- NSFW paragraph ends. I told you that you should have skipped it. -->

The Oatmeal has an Exploding Kittens card game on Kickstarter that was funded within 20 minutes. But Mr. Oats doesn't really need Kickstater. He once sent a troll lawyer a photo of money he had raised spelling 'FU.' I already met my four-letter-words quota so you're left to decipher that.

Anyway, that card game prompted this winning CNN lede: "It's like UNO, except there are goats, magical enchiladas and kittens that can kill you." Yep. Just like UNO.

All this needs bacon, obviously:

Facebook says it's taking out the hoax garb showing up on Facebook. Sure thing, brah.

One hot cat: Exploding Kittens, obvs.

State of the Union 2015 bingo: FACE BINGO edition

Every year, news organizations spend many resources creating very useful State of the Union bingo cards so that you can watch and not really pay attention to what's being said and/or clapped or tsk tsk'ed.

This year is no different.

I guess that beats the drinking games.

Anyway! I made my own because of course I did.

Here's hoping Boehner cries.

Live music should be mandatory at the office

Pete Seeger in Kingston in 2012. Freeman file.

The legendary Pete Seeger made the Hudson Valley city of Beacon his longtime home. But now the city is being overrun by hipsters, according to Hudson Valley mag, which is starting to milk this topic more than I am, and that's saying something.
Don't say I didn't warn you.

Much like Seeger's Camp Woodland near Phoenicia in the Catskills, the musical tradition continues in the nearby Ashokan Center at the end of the month, where the Winter Hoot returns. If you don't live in the Hudson Valley and the Catskills, you're missing out.
NOT YOU, HIPSTERS. YOU STAY OUT.

Jay Ungar and Molly Mason (you are very likely to also know them from "Ashokan Farewell," above, featured prominently in Ken Burn's "The Civil War") AND Mike + Ruthie came by the office yesterday and treated us to a most incredible mini-concert as part of a new monthly feature we're working on but shhhh don't tell anyone I told you it's a secret.

For a minute there, there was music everywhere. This should be mandatory in the office just saying boss just saying.

The Google Glass Explorer program officially ended on Monday as I was figuring out how to reframe the experiment.  That gif above is from a Glass video because I'm trying to make you dizzy.

This also makes me dizzy: Here's a Plymouth kid who didn't go to a party so of course his parents got a bill for it.

This is worse: Here are some ~brands~ doing their thing during MLK Day.

World War III has not started but winter is still terrible

Previously, on 'Downton Abbey'

There was a time when a news account's Twitter account was hacked and tweeted some terrible news and everyone freaked out for a bit. Nowadays? Meh.

Winter is terrible but you already knew that.

I was going to write something about SUNY New Paltz being in HBO's 'Girls' again because the episode aired on Sunday but I lost power yesterday, which brings you that wonderful photo of Highland Avenue in Kingston above. So all you get is SUNY New Paltz milking it, again. I was going to watch 'Downton Abbey,' anyway. NO SPOILERS!

I imagine it all goes down like this:

There's a cat cafe in New York City because of course there is.

Brooklyn, home of migrating hipsters and now the shigella bacterium outbreak that's creeping up the Hudson Valley just saying.

Is running old content "a social hack, a handy feature or a trick?" I don't know Mathew LOLOLOL here are some quizzes I've done.

One cat: The aforementioned Mathew Ingram also says the New York Times and Buzzfeed are not that different. That sounds risible but there are actually some very good points there. But, no. I'm not going to explain it because there's a photo of two kittens inside cups with the post and that's all I wanted to bring up.

One Google Glass photo: You shall not pass, shigella bacterium.

If you give a perp a cookie

I'm only adding this here because gifs break the Freeman's front page. But there's more!

"Do you recognize the individual in the car? If so, we would like to talk to him!" says the Kingston Police Department on Facebook, all excited as if they were going to give the perp a cookie good jorb.
In any case, are you reading this and you're the perp? Go to 1 Garraghan Drive in Kingston! They have cookies? Who knows!

Remember that time we gave a Kingston Police officer Google Glass for a day? That's just a lame transition sentence to point out Google says it's ending the Explorer program and I'm just trying to tell my boss who paid for Glass that the Freeman got its investment back? LOLOLOL now let's go buy a drone.

At any rate, I did post a ton of photos and of course there are cats hidden in most of the albums. SO: BEST. INVESTMENT. EVER.

One tangent: "Many readers are likely unaware of the impending sale" of the parent company of the Freeman. Wait! Did I just made you awarhere's a baby pig wearing a sweater.
Phew! That was close.

One letter: I'm officially a man.

Not the first or second time, either.

One Dateline: "Aboard President Roosevelt’s funeral train."

Despite some anger, everything is awesome

Remember when I had a column in *print* and of course I wrote about cats but one time I wrote that the angry Kingston mayor is angry?

He's ( •_•)
still ( •_•)>⌐■-■
angry (⌐■_■)
and running out of people to get angry about LOLOLOL but srrsly don't be angry.

It's not a good look, and you might get caught on camera one day. Ask your predecessor.

Talking about angry things, I hope you bought glitter to sent it to your enemies with http://shipyourenemiesglitter.com/ because now you can't sorry.

But enough of that. After all, everything is awesome.
Let's see:

'Everything is AWESOME!!!" has an Oscar nomination and that's awesome.

Esquire wanted to end 'awesome' at the beginning of 2014 and it didn't work and that's awesome.

Robert Plant is to perform at Mountain Jam, which already has the Black Keys lined up, and that's awesome.

The Freeman's pet contest is back and that's awesome.

Yesterday's #DFMchat was about how to improve posting things to Facebook and it ended with "I HAVE SPECIAL EYES" and that's awesome.

A New York Times headline says you have to do this to fall in love with anyone and that's awesome and/or a total over-promising headline don't do that Gray Lady I love you but c'mon.

Now that I think about it, the Lego Movie didn't get an Oscar nod and that's not awesome.

Nevermind. That's awesome.

This post will not go viral

A four-year old Storify about the ~New Brooklyn ~ is going viral again because people keep posting it on Facebook. Astute readers of Yesterday Internet, Today learned on Monday that it was not a recent post. You can brag about that but I wouldn't because that would be weird. Don't be weird.

CNN struck a deal with the FAA about drones and, wait! Does it mean that we're soon going to see drone journalisNO IT DOESN'T.

Good news! You can now send glitter to your enemies. Don't say I don't provide a useful service.

Bad news! You can't curse or buy Snickers in the newsroom at the York Daily Record, a sister pub of the Freeman. Just to make sure I bought a Snickers bar and ate it while cursing. Freedom wins.

One viral cursing cat.

DFM chat tackles how to post to Facebook as it constantly changes its algorithm

#fail

Greetings!

Journalists, members of Digital First Media and pretty much everyone else who wants to - are going to be taking part on the weekly Twitter chat Wednesday at noon, Eastern Time. If you got here because a college teacher sent you, *high five cat gif* But seriously how do you guys find this?

Anyway! Today we tackle Facebook. As the algorithm changes —and, boy, does it change?— so does journalists' way of posting and the implications of such changes, like uploading video to Facebook as opposed to just posting a link to the video. "Post great content" is great and all that, but there are lingering questions. Should you sponsor your posts? Should you upload your hard-to-produce videos? Bring your questions, your #realtalk, your links and tips.

The feed is posted below. You can also check out past chats over here.

If you want to chime in, post a comment in the container or a tweet with the hashtag "#dfmchat" so it can automatically appear below.

'GOAT HAD THE TIME OF HIS LIFE'

Have you ever wondered how many goats live in the United States?

It doesn't matter!

The helpful journalists at the Washington Post's Wonkblog created a map of ~"literally"~ every goat in the United States because data journalism? Who cares? GOATS!

ANYWAY! According the 2012 data from the United States Department of Agriculture, this is the breakdown of the local goat population, by county:

Ulster: 330

Greene: 443

Columbia: 667

Dutchess: 3,126

More goats: The escaped Lowell, Massachusetts, goat can now have a home, if he's ever found.

'GOAT HAD THE TIME OF HIS LIFE' screamed the Freeman in 1906 and the sub-headlines are even better.

So this is more than obligatory.

I don't know what else to do with this information, so here's an New York Mag article about going to Hudson. No mentions of Brooklyn so *slow clap gif*

An 80-year-old retired Sullivan County principal won the $326M Mega Millions jackpot. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 258.9 million.

So here's some more ~ data journalism ~: You're more likely to be killed by an asteroid than winning the lottery.

Hey, you never know.

New York Times compares area to Brooklyn, Part ILostCount

Remember that time(s) when the New York Times compared some area in the Hudson Valley or The Catskills or anywhere else anywhere to Brooklyn even though c'mon srsly again? It got so bad the Gray Lady's standards editor told his peeps to cut it out.

But that was waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in November of 2014, so long ago it's already been forgotten obvs idk lol?

So in the latest installment of "OMG THIS PLACE IS LIKE BROOKLYN YOU GUYS!" the venerable publication compared the town of Phoenicia to Williamsburg North, which prompted this most hipster reply from the Watershed Post good jorb. At least the interactive feature was very nice.

But let's not be unfair to the Times. This is standard modus operandi for a bunch of publications— online and in print travel sites, Escape Brooklyn, shameless marketing listicles that I refuse to link to because they're terrible, Sari stahp, Hudson Valley Mag you too don't think I didn't notice.

I did a huge list of this four years ago and I'm still updating the abomination. It's as terrible as hipsters.

Or hipster quizzes. But seriously, "when I grow I I want to write about hipsters" is not what I was thinking when I went into journalism.

So when The New York Times asks, "what did we missed in the Catskills?" I. CAN'T. EVEN.

At least the Times is not this guy. Or this guy.

One artisanal cat: Felix Salmon is not a cat or a fish but a noted financial journalist I noticed he noticed that in Ulster County, pedestrians get tickets when they're hit by cars. Take that, Brooklyn.

One reclaimed Google Glass photo:

Some context, kind of

On Charlie:

* Big news organization's meeting:

Editor 2: " I FOUND ONE! "

Moving on...

There are a million reason why editors shouldn't put jokes when doing news pages that they intend to take out later. Here's another one.

At least we know what will be on TV when the world ends

News!
Newly re-elected Congressman Chris Gibson, R-Kinderhook, says he won't seek re-election, and that obviously means that my Gibson gifs will need to be updated, if he goes for statewide office or for P R E S I D E N T later on but let's not speculate just yet OK? Let's just focus on this terrible Gibson quiz.

Not News!

Here's a sneak peek at SUNY New Paltz appearing in 'Girls'

The thirsty peeps at SUNY New Paltz will like you to know that the campus appears for, like, two seconds in the ad for the upcoming season of HBO's 'Girls,' starring Lena Dunham, which debuts on Sunday at 9 p.m. so set your DVR because Downton Abbey.

As you might remember, the cast came to campus in July and shot some scenes and made Dunham pose awkwardly with the campus t-shirt. Good jorb!

New Paltz has a lot of photos from that event. It counts as many as 40 students, faculty and staff as extras so that'll be fun to watch.

ANYWAY! Here's the preview that's been around since early December but whatevs:

Did you catch the campus? It's around second 50.
